In Maui County, local elections have a huge impact on your daily life. The Maui County Council is responsible for decisions that directly shape the island’s physical environment and cost of living.

It has authority over zoning, land use, development approvals, water rates, property tax classifications, and many infrastructure projects. These are policies that determine where housing can be built, how agricultural land is preserved, how much residents pay in property taxes, and how local resources like water are managed.

By contrast, federal elections determine leadership in Washington, D.C., where decisions are made about national defense, immigration, federal taxation, Social Security, Medicare, and nationwide policy. While those issues are important, they are often broader in scope and may not immediately change the zoning of a neighborhood in Wailuku or the property tax rate on a Maui homeowner.

Local government also oversees essential public services such as fire protection, police services, road maintenance, parks, and certain aspects of disaster preparedness and recovery. On an island community with limited land and natural resources, decisions made at the county level can have long-term effects on development patterns, environmental protection, and housing availability. In our system, ALL 9 Councilmembers are supposed to represent ALL residents. So, its your responsibility to vote for all 9 Maui County Council seats. Don't leave any sections of your ballot blank. All Maui County voters can vote for James Forrest to fill the Wailuku- Waihee- Waikapu seat on the Council.

How to Participate in the Election Process
